Locally grown loose leaf tea
There is a misconception that "tea" can't be grown in the US or that it isn't "good tea" and that's why most tea is imported from India or Asia. However, tea can be grown and is being grown in the US. There is a growing number of small farms/tea gardens producing quality tea products here in the United States and there is good reason for this - tea is good for the body. The health benefits of tea far outweigh other caffeine beverages and there are numerous studies that show tea's antioxidants can be effective against the free radicals that cause cancer and other serious health conditions.
We first became interested in growing tea after hearing a presentation during the 2020 CFSA Conference. Christine Parks of Camellia Forest Nursery opened our eyes to this amazing plant and its potential as an agricultural product. Since then we have been on a journey to learn about growing tea, processing the tea leaves, and creating loose leaf tea for consumption. For most tea growers here in America, an acre of tea is about 6,000 plants. It is an expensive endeavor to start a tea garden if you are purchasing the plants, so we decided to grow our own - from seeds and cuttings. Because of this, it is taking some time to get these plants to maturity to be able to plant our first acre, but we are nearing the time for our initial planting. Our end goal is to have between 3-6 acres total for production and another 1-3 acres of tea trees for seed production. Once planted, our tea bushes may live hundreds of years - well beyond our time. Talk about sustainable farming!
Our business plan includes selling our tea on site through a farm store and online. We want to have guests come out and tour our farm, learn about tea and taste a sample of what we have to offer.
